…A sleeping pill. Unlike prescription sleeping pills, Sleepasil is a dietary supplement that helps you relax and fall asleep without the fear of harmful side effects, such as grogginess when you wake up, dizziness, not being able to wake up when you need to and becoming addicted to it.

…Addictive. Prescription sleeping pills, in general, come in several types. These medications, classified as sedative hypnotics, act by working on receptors in the brain to slow down the nervous system. Some medications are used more for inducing sleep, while others are used for staying asleep. Some prescription sleeping pills have been found to carry a higher risk of becoming habit forming. Sleepasil is not addictive because it does not interfere with the body’s natural ability to acquire sleep and to stay asleep.

…An OTC sleeping pill. Here there must be a fine distinction between what Sleepasil is and what other OTC sleeping pills actually are. The main ingredient of other over-the-counter sleeping pills are antihistamines such as Diphenhydramine and Doxylamine. Though both have been proven to induce sleep, their side effects such as drowsiness the next day, clumsiness and the feeling of being-off-balance, constipation, and blurred vision, are common and severe. Sleepasil, as a dietary supplement containing only all-natural plant extracts and Melatonin, does not carry such risks of side effects.

…The magic bullet to cure your ills. Sleepasil may help you get the sleep you need, but it will not rid you of any underlying disease or psychological condition that may have caused you to be sleepless in the first place. Certain diseases, such as arthritis, asthma, heart disease and chronic pain, and certain psychological and mental conditions, such as stress and anxiety, may cause chronic insomnia. This is where we recommend first and foremost that you consult a doctor, and make the necessary lifestyle changes.

When you’re ill, or something’s bugging your mind, or you need to resolve some interpersonal conflicts, a caring friend or loved one would advise you to “sleep it off”, and when you wake up from a good night’s slumber, you almost always feel better, refreshed, a bit more cheerful, and ready to face your issues and resolve them.

But what if you haven’t been able to sleep things off? What if, in the morning, you’re grumpier, crankier, more depressed, and feel physically worse off than yesterday? Chances are, you didn’t get those forty winks you so needed. Now, imagine that this sleepless episode repeats itself over the course of a week, two weeks, or a month.

Welcome to this garish nightmare called insomnia. Insomnia, or chronic insomnia, technically speaking, is habitual sleeplessness; the failure to get enough sleep on most nights over a one-month period. It affects at least 30 percent of healthy seniors. When you are unable to go to sleep when you first go to bed, or wake up during the night and are unable to go back to sleep (in the vernacular, “hindi na mahuli ang tulog”), then you might be suffering from insomnia.

Insomnia will hit us one time or another during our lifetime. It has many causes, chief of which can be an underlying serious illness, psychological distress, anxiety, or stress. Insomnia that is temporary usually won’t have lasting ill effects on the individual. However, it is chronic insomnia that you should be truly wary of. Aside from it being a likely symptom of another serious physical, mental, or psychological condition, chronic sleep disorders can themselves lead to life threatening physical and mental conditions.

About half of insomnia cases can be attributed to depression and psychological disorders such as anxiety, stress, or grief, and to a wide variety of physical causes, including arthritis, asthma, breathing problems, hypoglycemia, hypothyroidism, indigestion, kidney or heart disease, muscle aches, and Parkinson’s disease.

The intake of various beverages and drugs can also cause insomnia. Caffeine, many antidepressants, the antiseizure medication phenytoin, most appetite suppressants, beta-blockers (medications used for high blood pressure and heart ailments, the decongestant pseudoephedrine (found in many cold and allergy remedies), and thyroid hormone replacement drugs, can also lead to insomnia.

The lack of nutrients calcium and magnesium can cause an individual to wake up after a few hours and not be able to return to sleep. Systemic disorders involving the brain, digestive system, endocrine system, heart, kidneys, liver, lungs and pancreas all may affect sleep. Poor nutritional habits and a sedentary lifestyle can also disrupt sleep.

Chronic sleeping disorders, or sleep deprivation lasting more than three days, can result in serious deterioration in overall performance and can even result in mild personality changes. Lack of sleep has also been known to cause premature aging (indeed, we do look older when we’re puyat).

Women who suffer from copper and iron deficiencies, observes research psychologist Dr. James Penland, are at a higher risk of suffering from insomnia and certain sleep disorders. A hair analysis can reveal if you are iron deficient.

Waking up 200 times a night

Of special concern is sleep apnea, which, in the United States alone, affects about 20 million Americans. Sleep apnea is commonly associated with snoring and extremely irregular breathing throughout the night. In sleep apnea, breathing actually stops for as long as two minutes at a time while the individual is asleep.. When breathing stops, the level of oxygen in the blood drops, resulting in oxygen deprivation, The individual then awakens, startled and gasping. A person with sleep apnea may awaken as many as 200 times throughout the night, with him or her not even remembering these awakenings.

Aside from disrupting normal sleep and causing extreme sleepiness during the day, sleep apnea is associated with more serious health problems. People who have sleep apnea tend to have higher than normal blood pressure and are more likely to have strokes than the general population. They also face an increased risk of heart disease, and also seem to have a higher-than-normal incidence of emotional and psychotic disorders. Experts attribute this to what they call a “dream deficit”—a lack of adequate rapid-eye-movement (REM) sleep, the stage of sleep in which dreaming occurs. A person with sleep apnea often cannot settle into REM sleep for even the eight to 12 seconds it takes to have a normal, healthy dream.

And it has been scientifically accepted that a person who doesn’t dream isn’t in a proper state of mind.

Your sleep is unique, like fingerprints.

Your sleep is unique, like fingerprints.

The quality and length of sleep is different for every individual. Some wake up refreshed and ready for the day after getting only as little as five hours of sleep. Others need to get up to 10 hours worth of shuteye. On average, though, adults need 7 to 8 hours of sleep.

As we all know, sleep is as much an essential component of life among other animal species as it is with us—the only variables apparently being the duration and depth of sleep. The natural triggers for sleep have been biologically synchronized with the time of day. For most animals, including us humans, the darkness of night triggers sleep.

Sleep is the time when the body can recharge and repair itself without being burdened by the daytime rigors and pressures of survival, or be distracted by our conscious brain’s worries. Think of it like a roadworks project: The construction gets done faster and more thoroughly when there’s no traffic to bother the workmen and there’s no sun to weaken them and slow down the work.

So when you wake up the next day after a good night’s sleep, it’s just like your body and brain is riding on newly paved and widened road—the body ache is gone, any wound you have has healed faster, you’ve remembered the lyrics to a song, the name of a friend you bumped into yesterday (but was too tired to remember his name at the time), and ideas for an office presentation are coming in torrents. That’s the miracle of sleep, something akin to being born again every morning.

Sleep is a heightened anabolic state, accentuating the growth and rejuvenation of the immune, nervous, skeletal and muscular systems

Sleep timing is controlled by the circadian clock, sleep-wake homeostasis, and in humans, within certain bounds, willed behavior. The circadian clock—an inner timekeeping, temperature-fluctuating, enzyme-controlling device—works in tandem with adenosine, a neurotransmitter that inhibits many of the bodily processes associated with wakefulness. Adenosine is created over the course of the day; and high levels of this neurotransmitter lead to sleepiness. In diurnal animals, sleepiness occurs as the circadian element causes melatonin production and a gradual decrease in core body temperature. The timing is affected by one’s chronotype. It is the circadian rhythm that determines the ideal timing of a correctly structured and restorative sleep episode.

Normal sleep consists of two main states, designated rapid-eye movement (REM) and non-rapid- eye-movement (non-REM) sleep. It is REM sleep that is most often associated with dreaming. The stages of sleep are further broken down into the following:

Light sleep stage 1. We drift in and out and can be awakened easily. Our eyes move slowly and muscle activity slows.

Light sleep stage 2: Our eye movement stops and our brain waves become slower, with occasional bursts of rapid waves called sleep spindles.

Deep sleep stage 3: Extremely slow brain waves called delta waves appear, interspersed with smaller, faster waves.

Deep sleep stage 4: The brain produces mostly delta waves. There are no eye movements and no muscle activity.

Stage 5: REM sleep. Breathing becomes more rapid, irregular and shallow. The eyes jerk rapidly while limb muscles become temporarily paralyzed. Dreams almost always happen in this stage, but may occur in other sleep stages.

It takes about 2 hours to go through all five stages of sleep, after which they are normally repeated. REM sleep usually occurs about 90 minutes after we fall asleep. Adults spend half their sleep time in stage 2 sleep, 20 percent in REM sleep, and 30 percent in the other stages. Infants, on the other hand, start out spending half their sleep time in REM sleep. Older people spend less time in delta sleep (stages 3 and 4), and some may not experience it at all.

So, yes, indeed, all humans need sleep, but every individual has unique requirements to be able to classify him or herself to have had sound sleep. So how would you know if you have been sleeping well or sleeping soundly the past days, or nights? Here’s a handy rule of thumb: If you’ve found yourself suddenly dozing off at the dinner table, or while watching an engaging movie, or maybe even during a conversation or (heaven forbid) while driving, that’s a sure sign that’s something’s amiss with your own body clock.

Don’t ignore these warning signs, because if your sleep problems become chronic, more serious physical and mental issues will almost certainly arise.

Hops (Humulus lupulus) is another potent herb that offers a multitude of health benefits, chief of which as an aid to sleep. The flowers, fruit and leaves of this plant have traditionally been placed inside a pillowcase to help individuals get their needed Zs. Hops helps reduce and relieve anxiety, thus helping prepare an individual to sleep. Aside from this, hops also stimulates the appetite, and is useful for cardiovascular disorders, hyperactivity, nervousness, pain, restlessness, shock, toothaches, and even ulcers.

As a precaution, though, persons taking antidepressants should not take hops.

Sleepasil, an herbal sleep supplement manufactured by Boscogen Inc and exclusively distributed in the Philippines by Organica, contains all these four key ingredients to help you sleep soundly, just as nature intended you to do.

Sleepasil is well within the safe recommended dosages of each active ingredient.

However, should you still suffer from inadequate amounts of sleep after three weeks of regularly taking Sleepasil, then you should consult a health professional.

Chamomile, particularly the German variety (Matricaria recutita) is a member of the daisy family, and its flowers are used to make the herbal supplements. Traditionally, chamomile has been used to treat mouth ulcers, skin irritations, and general anxiety, and there is an increased interest in its anti-cancer properties, as well. Chamomile, however, is best known as a soluble tea to help people fall and stay asleep.

Individuals who have allergies to plants in the Asteraceae family (eg aster, mums, mugwort, ragweed) are not encouraged to take Chamomile, as possible side effects of this herb include rashes or shortness of breath.

Melatonin is a neurohormone naturally produced by our pineal glands, a cone-shaped structure in the brain. As an antioxidant, melatonin has been found to be able to penetrate the mitochondria, the cells’ “power plant” that produces energy, and protect the mitochondria from free radical damage. That’s good news for people looking to slow down the aging process.

But the better news for the sleep-deprived is that Melatonin helps our bodies keep in sync with the rhythms of day and night, thus helping regulate sleep. The production and release of Melatonin in our bodies is stimulated by darkness, and inhibited by light. For individuals (especially business process outsourcing and call center agents) who might have no choice but to sleep during the day, a melatonin supplement ensures a steady supply of this crucial hormone and antioxidant.

Extensive research and anecdotal evidence show no toxic levels of melatonin supplementation, and is thus considered a side effect-free sleeping aid for both adults and for children suffering from physical problems resulting to sleep disorders.

Valerian root, from the Valerian herb (scientific name Valeriana officinalis), is a favorite among experts to overcome insomnia and sleeplessness, mainly because of its numerous other health benefits. Aside from acting as a sedative, the Valerian root or rhizome also improves blood circulation, reduces mucus from colds, and helps stem anxiety, fatigue, high blood pressure, irritable bowel syndrome, menstrual and muscle cramps, nervousness, pain, spasms, and ulcers—conditions which, if otherwise unchecked, could by themselves cause sleeplessness.

The Valerian herb is native to Europe and Asia, but now can be found all around the world. Traditionally, the root has been used to treat varied conditions—from headaches to insomnia, to digestive disorders and urinary tract infections, and even angina. The root is believed to contain the herb’s active ingredient called valerenic acid.

Studies of Valerian Root use among adults have shown that the herb helps reduce the time it takes to fall asleep, and even improves the quality of sleep. A 2007 study conducted at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia showed that almost 6 percent of the more than 31,000 people surveyed said they used Valerian Root supplements to help them overcome insomnia.

Within reasonable dosages (meaning not more than 600 mg per day), side effects of the Valerian Root are rare, and these may include headache, gastrointestinal distress, or dizziness.

Sleepasil, an herbal sleep supplement manufactured by Boscogen Inc and exclusively distributed in the Philippines by Organica, contains all these four key ingredients to help you sleep soundly, just as nature intended you to do.

Do you need a prescription to buy your regular supply of vitamins? Do you need to get your doctor’s approval so you can buy a painkiller for your headache or body pains?

There are things safe enough to buy from your local drugstore that they do not require a prescription. Vitamins and food supplements are some of them. So are the more established pain killers and flu medicines. These are over-the-counter (OTC) items, and their documented adverse side effects, if there are any, are almost always minor and temporary.

Sleepasil has been classified as an over-the-counter (OTC) sleeping aid or dietary supplement by the Philippine Food and Drug Administration. It contains a special blend of all-natural ingredients–Melatonin, Valerian Root, Chamomile, and Hops–that help you relax and fall asleep. This blend of all-natural ingredients—combined with varying amounts of natural extracts of Wild Jujube Seed, Scullcap, Passion Flower, and Calcium and Magnesium—assures you of product efficacy and safety.

By following the proper and recommended dosage, Sleepasil can provide you the peace of mind that comes with knowing that you are taking only what Nature provides—nothing more, nothing less.

Do consult a medical professional, however, if you are on regulated medication for a health condition, are pregnant or lactating, have a history of allergies, or if you just simply want to make sure.

Show us a person who doesn’t need to sleep, and we’ll show you someone who doesn’t need to breathe.

Show us a person who doesn’t need to sleep, and we’ll show you someone who doesn’t need to breathe. That’s how essential sleep is to life. Without sleep, there would literally be no waking moments, and no life. That is as certain as night follows the day, or the day follows the night (whatever your perspective).

Everybody needs help sometimes…

The cycle of sleep and wakefulness has been built in into our systems, and has evolved over millions of years to enable us to be awake and alert during the day, and to make us rest and fall asleep during the night. However, humans as we are, modern life and living has made it inevitable that, at one point or another in our lives, we will encounter some difficulty in maintaining this cycle, or getting sleep when we need to.

Such difficulties in sleeping can be caused by a number of factors—chief among them the increasing stresses of coping with daily life. Stress rears its ugly, unsettling head in a number of ways, but the result is often the same—nights spent awake, resulting in days spent less productively.

Certain physical conditions can also keep us awake when we should be asleep. Medical conditions such as arthritis, asthma, heart disease, and even Parkinson’s often result in lack of sleep and restlessness.

But more than any other physical condition, it is stress that keeps humans up at night. Stress—the psychological pressures of work, relationships, society, and from living in an increasingly competitive and complex society—affects most the mind. And the mind, as we all know, is a powerful thing; powerful enough to disrupt what eons of evolution has perfected in us. When our mind becomes too preoccupied with the “what ifs”, “what ought to bes”, and the “what nows”, the brain is unable to order the rest of the body to “log out” and go on “sleep mode”.

Get help naturally…

It is during such times that we do feel the desire to get a good night’s sleep. And in truth, your body needs it. Look to Mother Nature, then, to provide you with an all-natural and gentle push from vertical to horizontal. It is nature, the provider and nurturer of life, that is, after all, the source of our well-being.

Sleepasil is an herbal sleep supplement containing naturally occurring ingredients that have been found, time and again throughout history, to help individuals get a restful sleep. These ingredients are Valerian Root, Melatonin, Chamomile, and Hops.
